Voice over Internet Protocol services are services, which allow users to make voice calls via the internet. This is state of the art technology in the telecom sector and it has been experiencing growth since its revival into the market. Before we go into detail and discuss the characteristics of the service and how to choose a VoIP service provider, it is imperative that we know the basic workings of the technology. Voice over Internet Protocol services allow user to make voice calls by converting voice or analogue signal to digital data packets which are then transmitted from one end to another via the internet. Once the signal reaches their intended destination they are converted back to voice signals using VoIP technology.

Happy Sad

The success of VoIP services can be evaluated by the fact that almost every sector of the economy, whether it is the corporate sector or the household sector, all have switched to VoIP services. The primary reason for this switch is that many users are fed up of the filthy expensive conventional telephone services and some are tired of being ripped off by the conventional telephone companies for value added services which are offered free of charge by most if not all of the VoIP service providers.

If the advantages and the knowledge of VoIP services were widely known then there would never have been any user using conventional telephone services. The fact remains that many people even today hesitate to switch to VoIP services. What people need to understand is that conventional telephone services operate via copper cables whereas VoIP services operate with a high bandwidth internet connection, which operate via fiber optics and hence have a more capacity to transfer data at higher speed hence better voice quality.

It would be unfair to say that uncertainty is unjustified, the uncertainty amongst consumers to a certain extent is justified because as we all know that there are numerous VoIP service providers in the market, some of them are good and some of them are bad and some are pathetic or still amateur. In order to choose the best VoIP service provider in the market, one should first identify his or her requirements only then he or she will be able to make an informed decision. Nonetheless, it is highly advised that you go for a reputed VoIP service provider because they offer money back guarantee, round the clock customer service and a quality service.

Some VoIP companies even offer their services for such as Skype and Yahoo. However, the difference between a VoIP internet software and VoIP service is evident. This is the reason it is advised that you go for a mediocre VoIP service provider instead of a very low-end service provider in order to save money. The voice quality of the aforementioned software depends upon the internet connection and the online traffic, whereas the large established VoIP service providers have numerous servers and PSTN links to ensure the timely transfer of data without any delay.

Due to the technical nature of the service, it is highly advised that whichever VoIP service provider you decide to shortlist should offer round the clock technical support in order to ensure the smooth running of your service.

I have used voip phone service in all forms. I have used it on phone set, soft phone as well as USB. However, USB was the most horrible experience. I have noted that voip phone service on wireless technology does not perform well no matter what the vendor is.

  • Kristen Hughes

I would agree John. My experience with USB voip phone has also not been good. It is not only the wireless voip but also i have observed that if you have wireless internet, it works properly only if you are sitting under the antenna of the internet service provider. So be it voip or internet, to me both should have guided media for transmission.

  • Saad Bin Abdul Aziz

Yes the problem is not with the voip phone technology. It is the transmission media that plays its role. If you have a reliable transmission media like wires, your communication will remain stable in all types of weathers. However, if you are depending on atmosphere as a transmission media, then obviously, communication will also remain inconsistent like atmosphere itself.

I would not blame wireless technology. It works fine in a building as you might have seen wireless routers in our houses. However, the problem comes when we use it in wide area networks. The companies try to save their money and some times don’t install appropriate equipment required. This is why devices like USB VoIP fail to work up to the standards.

You have advised to look for a voip service provider with good reputation. My problem is that I have changed three voip service providers until now. All of them had very good reputation. Then I came to know that these companies were earning just because they had good marketing strategies but their quality was not up to the mark.

I can understand your problem. Sometimes companies spend too much on their advertisement. You even can’t imagine the extent to which they go for building an artificial reputation. However, such tactics do not work for a long time. As you have finally realized that they are not good. The best way to check a company would be to ask its clients about it.
