October the 9th 2010 should have been the day that John Lennon celebrated his 70th birthday, but instead it’s a day when the world honored the musician and peace activist who was cruelly gunned down by a psychopath at the entrance to his New York apartment building after returning from a recording studio on the evening of 8 December 1980.

John Lennon’s 70th Birthday was remembered around the world and even highlighted by the search engine giant Google who featured a special ‘Google’ logo for the day in honour of his birthday, complete with an animated video for the song “Imagine”, one of Lennon’s most enduring solo hits.

A weekend of peace-themed events in Iceland kicked off in the capital Reykjavik with the premiere of a film about Yoko’s quest to build the Imagine Peace Tower in memory of her husband.

The circular white stone structure, on the city’s Videy Island, has inscriptions of “Imagine Peace” in 24 languages. Fifteen spotlights sending light 30 feet into the air are lit every year from the date of the musician’s birthday to December 8 the day he was killed.

Since his tragic death 30 years ago, John Lennon’s name has been co-opted around the world for the names of parks, buildings and airports. Even something as off the wall as Liverpool Airport parking services have been named after the work of the musician, such as the ‘Imagine Car Parking’ service located just a short distance from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

This month also saw the release of the John Lennon Signature Box set of newly-remastered CDs. The project was overseen by Yoko Ono, and features digitally-enhanced versions of 7 official releases, and two bonus CDs of non-album singles and rare unreleased material.
